MIASA Project: Salafi Revival, Contested Identities and Conflicts in Postcolonial Ghana (1950s-2000s)
My project seeks to produce a monograph on Salafi revival in postcolonial Ghana which represents a dominant discourse in the public but has been a marginal in recent scholarship. The project aims among others to examine the changing trajectories of Salafi revival in Ghana from proselytization to joining global networks on extremism and humanitarianism. This project reconceptualises African Salafism in the context of religious authority and national politics with new perspectives on Ghana. I argue that Salafism found reception among people who were disenfranchised and disconnected from the established religious groups and benefited from pre-existing social and political cleavages.
