Public Roundtable: Sustainable Publication Practices: Perspectives from the Global South and Global North
March 9 @ 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm

Academic publishing practices play a gatekeeping role in determining what counts as “academic knowledge,” shaping both what scholars read and what they are able to publish. They operate within a global context in which epistemologies are shaped by asymmetrical power relations, material conditions, and patterns of (neo)coloniality. For example, research on citation patterns shows that knowledge produced in the Global South often needs to pass through the Global North to be “recognized” globally. The purpose of this roundtable is to critically reflect on the ways in which publication practices interact with issues of sustainable scholarship. Sustainability is understood in broad terms and encompasses questions of (social) equity, global partnerships, and development, alongside environmental considerations. Participants are invited to reflect on how publication practices amplify some voices but marginalize others, what interventions are possible to disrupt unsustainable patterns of knowledge production, and what changes they see as urgently needed to promote sustainable publication practices.
Panelists: Akosua Adomako Ampofo, Claudia Gastrow (online), Bettina Engels and Alexander Makulilo (online)
