Public Lecture: “Urban Market Dynamics and Conflicts over Marketplaces in Bamako, Accra, and Kumasi”; Speakers: Dr. Mahamadou Bassirou Tangara & Dr. Lamine Doumbia

November 18 @ 3:00 pm 4:30 pm

MIASA Seminar Room

Abstract:

This lecture examines urban markets in BamakoAccra, and Kumasi through an interdisciplinary analytical lens. It focuses on the tensions surrounding the governance and usage of market spaces, especially under urban development agendas that are often framed by neoliberal logics of modernization, which can marginalize local actors and practices. Through comparative case studies, this project reveals how market users negotiate space, legitimacy, and authority in contexts marked by competing rationalities.

Dr. Mahamadou Bassirou Tangara is an Associate Professor at Université des Sciences Sociales et de Gestion de Bamako (USSGB). His research focuses on poverty, the informal economy, conflict dynamics, and the impact of public policies on development, with particular attention to Mali’s socio-economic challenges.

Dr. Lamine Doumbia is a research associate at the Institute of Asian and African Studies, Department of African History, Humboldt University Berlin, and a member of the Lebenswelt in Krisen (LinC) research group at the University of Leipzig. His research focuses on urban land governance.

This lecture is open to the public.
