Panel: South-South Migration – A Comparative Perspective

Panel Abstract: 

Policies and Research on migration, displacement and flight are still dominated by Western-centric perspectives and narratives. The majority of movement, though, takes place within the so-called Global South. This panel aims to shine light on the multiple forms of this Sout-South-migration including dimensions such as international student mobility which has so far been predominantly analyzed as a South-North movement. However, due to the creation of regional hubs and expansion of protocols and policy frameworks,  it is also noticeably increasing within and across Africa. The panel further tackles the often overlooked cross-regional movements, in particular between Africa and Latin America. It questions distinctions that categorize countries as either “origin”, “destination” or “transit” as well as labels such as “vulnerability”. Mobility is rather conceptualized as a multidimensional process involving the circulation of knowledge, identities, political imaginaries, and decolonial practices. Structural conditions such as violence, poverty, inequality and political instability as well as intersecting forms of precarity are taken into consideration. Even if the focus of this panel is on South-South-migration it cannot ignore the global context with its increasing focus on control and containment and the neglect of the human rights of people on the move.
