Oluwayemisi Olusola Adebomi - MIASA - Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa

Oluwayemisi Olusola Adebomi received her PhD from University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 2017 and currently teaches in the General Studies Department of the Federal University of Technology, Akure. She has won the postdoctoral fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany and is also a grantee of the African-German Network of Excellence in Science (AGNES). She has several publications in edited books and peer-reviewed journals spanning research areas such as discourse analysis, gender studies, multimodality, stylistics and computer-mediated communication.

MIASA Project: A Corpus-based Exploration of the Computer-mediated Political Discourses of Select Nigerian and Ghanaian Female Politicians

My MIASA project is a linguistic exploration of the power expressions and self-presentation strategies in the computer mediated discourse of six female presidential candidates in Ghana and Nigeria (three from each country). Data for this study will be gathered from a corpus of online resources such as websites, blogs, Facebook and Twitter. The study will employ a combination of van Dijk’s political discourse analytical model and Susan Herring’s Computer Mediated Discourse Analysis to investigate the interconnections of language, power and ideology in the texts under consideration. It will also examine the way the new media invigorate gender-balanced political representation in these democracies as well as discuss the impact of the new media on the presidential ambition of the selected female candidates.
