Interdisciplinary Fellow Group on Sustainability in West Africa’s Gold Mining Sector

With calls for sustainable societies and ecosystems becoming ever more vocal, the global gold production system continues to prove its importance and endurance in times of multiple crises. This IFG studies sustainability dimensions and futures of gold mining in West Africa, which is one of the most important gold regions in the world. Despite the manifold potential economic gains for national economies and workers of large- and small-scale mining projects, research has shown that gold mining activities are carried out at huge environmental costs and contribute to complex arrays of negative socio-economic and health impacts in vicinities of extraction. Drawing on a non-normative understanding of sustainability, an international and interdisciplinary research team will explore multi-scalar governance that contributes to make the sector (more) sustainable. More specifically, it investigates different actors, technologies and policies involved in shaping local, national and global sustainability agendas.
