Public Lecture: Cultural intermediation and the mediation of culture: The issue of cultural hegemonies in social gatherings Speaker: Dr. Laure Carbonnel
April 18, 2023 All day
MIASA Conference Room, 18th April 2023
Abstract:
Different people, groups, social worlds, and experiences, even when opposed, may be connectedin cultural centres, art schools , on musical platforms or at dance gatherings. They are places ofsociability where people meet, share and discover, but are also places where certain social imagery, habits, andworld views, impose themselves in the public space, through private experiences. This lecture will put into perspective different situations where cultural and artistic practices are presentedas mediation. I will specifically discuss the often-mentionned universal vs local model in light of theissue of cultural hegemonies.
Dr. Laure Carbonnel is an anthropologist, currently a senior fellow at MIASA, University of Ghana. She has worked with ritual clowns, cultural entrepreneurs and DJs in Mali and Ghana. Her research addresses dance gatherings, moral regulation of conducts, cultural cities, circulation and anchorages of people.
